What a Jump Ahead Pediatrics Paraprofessional Does: Supporting Students Every Day

Paraprofessionals are essential members of the educational support team, especially for students who need individualized assistance. At Jump Ahead Pediatrics, our paraprofessionals provide direct classroom support, behavioral guidance, and structured routines that help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Their work strengthens both student progress and overall classroom functioning.

Core Job Duties of a Jump Ahead Pediatrics Paraprofessional

While each assignment is unique, paraprofessionals typically support students by providing direct student support, academic support, and assistance with daily routines. Jump Ahead Pediatrics’ paraprofessionals provide students with direct one on one support, or small groups. They frequently assist students with autism, developmental delays, behavioral needs, or learning differences, and help to reinforce teacher-led instruction and help students stay focused. This academic support can look like guiding students through classwork and assignments, helping to organize materials and reinforce skills like reading, writing, and math, and support use of assistive technology when needed.

Paraprofessionals also assist with daily routines such as providing support during lunch, recess, and specials, and helping with bathroom routines or personal care when required. Some para positions that require bathroom support fall into a higher pay scale. Behavioral support, and Social-Emotional Skill Building are key aspects of a paraprofessional’s day. This can look like supporting individualized behavior plans, redirect off-task or unsafe behavior, modeling communication and emotional regulation, encouraging peer interaction, and supporting conflict resolution and problem-solving. These duties ensure students receive support across all areas of their school experience, not just academics.

How Paraprofessionals Help Students Thrive

Paraprofessionals are often the steady, calming presence students rely on throughout the day. Their support helps students build confidence and independence, stay engaged in the classroom, work through frustration and big emotions, develop routines they can rely on, and celebrate accomplishments, both big and small.

At Jump Ahead Pediatrics, our paraprofessionals are trained to encourage independence, not dependency. They gradually fade prompts, offer positive reinforcement, and empower students to participate more fully in their school environment.
